About 90 species of fungi have been isolated from one stage or another of soybean-cyst-nematode in the United States. Most of them are not parasites, and few have been studied in detail. To date no organism has been shown to be efficacious and economical in field studies. Nematode suppressive soil is a good to look for new biological control agents. Egg parasitic fungi should be isolated from surface-disinfested eggs rather than whole cysts. Obligate parasites are found by careful examination because they do not grow on artificial media. For practical application, fungal parasites should be culturable on artificial media until methods are available to culture obligate fungi. The characteristics of good biological control agents for SCN are: 1) highly parasitic on SCN (over 60% in Petri dish agar block tests), 2) host range primarily of nematode species, but not pathogenic to crop plants or higher animals, 3) grow at suitable pH and temperature ranges, 4) grow on artificial media, 5) identifiable and with mode of action known, and 6) can be formulated in a usable form. The fungus should be tested in pots and in the fields and competition with other soil microorganisms should be considered. New approaches, such as combinations of multiple agents or improvement of formulations, have considerable potential for biological control of SCN. |
